Mike Joey – Independent

(Australia)

Born and raised in Melbourne Australia, Mike “JOEY” Salemme’s teenage years were spent playing in hard rock, funk and grunge garage bands on the local circuit.
In 2004 Mike was involved in a major car accident and was in a coma for 2 weeks and at a rehabilitation hospital for 3 months. He sustained many internal injuries and it was not certain if he would be able to play drums again. Beating the odds, Mike picked up the sticks and after 2 years of rehabilitation started playing hand percussion. After playing percussion with SuperStar Loops, alongside some of Melbourne’s finest House and Latin DJs at the Kiss My Grass Music Festival at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl Melbourne in front of 40,000 people, Mike felt that it was time to get back on the full drum kit again and test his wares as a hard hitting rock drummer.
Mike cut his teeth in the covers scene for some of Melbourne’s most successful cover bands including Slumberyard, Rockstar, Element, Drive Live and did various fill in work for other cover bands playing an array of different styles. Mike also played drums for hard hitting Blues Rock band Tough Luck supporting Australian Rock legends The Angels in 2007. In 2011 Mike
played acoustic percussion for Australian born Toby Rand (London Cries, ‘Rockstar Supernova’ American TV show contestant) at the “IT’S PERSONAL” shows in Melbourne. Mike also plays a residency with Collective Live with Chloe Maggs at Melbourne’s Crown Casino.
From 2010 to 2012 Mike was one of the founding members and songwriters of his former rock band Ten Thousand, a recording and touring act that played and supported national and international bands at some of the most iconic venues in Australia. In early 2012 Mike also appeared in the Australian issued Drum Scene magazine as an up and coming artist and was endorsed with Sabian Cymbal company. After more than 2 years with Ten Thousand Mike felt a change of direction was needed with his music so he went back to his Hard Rock/Grunge roots and went full steam ahead with his own side project called FOREVER.
Forever was born in 2011 and over the next year was the start of great things for Mikes band, breaking into the Music scene in early 2012 with the release of their first single co produced by James Lugo, ‘Something For Nothing Like Diamonds For No One’. Forever has gained a massive amount of respect in such a short time. Mike and Forever are already headlining shows at iconic venues such as the prestigious Corner Hotel. With the release of 2 new singles ‘Nothing To Lose’ which was aired on Melbourne’s home of rock Triple M FM Melbourne and ‘Neverland’ in mid 2013.
Having worked with various producers here in Australia and overseas, including Lindsay Gravina at Birdland Studios Melbourne and James Lugo at Hemisphere Recording Studios in Los Angeles, Mike is known as an all rounder when it comes to drumming. Taking one on one tips from some of the greats in the industry, including Pink’s drummer Mark Schulman and Prince’s drummer John Blackwell, Mike has learnt, whether it’s rock, funk, blues or hip hop, it is so, so important to sit on the beat to service the song and the artist performing it and not just about having flashy chops or twirling sticks.
In 2013 Mike was endorsed with American based Crush Drum Company as one of a few Australian artists on the company’s roster. Mike is now an independent artist playing for, Forever, solo artist Peta Evans Taylor who Mike will be flying to London for to play on a TV show aired to over 50 million viewers in 2014. Mike also plays percussion for Collective Live and is looking
forward to working with artists who take music seriously but most of all enjoy what they do and enjoy a life with music.
